The growth of pickleball in the Greater Toronto Area (and across the country, for that matter) is unmistakable. The challenge now is channelling the excitement and matching the enthusiasm with places to play.
As with any rapidly growing sport, expansion is limited when demand can't keep up with the interest in playing. Obvious barriers for new players are easily securing court times or accessing the equipment (a paddle) needed to play.
Another obstacle to trying this new sport for many is our local climate. Canadians generally enjoy all four seasons, which creates demand for indoor facilities while also wanting to take advantage of outdoor play whenever possible.
With the arrival of warmer weather, it's fun now searching for new public outdoor courts that have surfaced since last summer. Moreover, numerous new indoor facilities are becoming available as well. If you're keen on trying this racquet sport craze or looking to expand your pickleball network, here are spots to visit...
Pickleplex Social Club
Currently operating four locations in Ontario and planning more across Canada, Pickleplex Social Club is ideal for those new to the sport. The club boasts a superb design, supported by accessible coaching and many learn to play sessions for beginners. Additionally, it's conveniently located in shopping mall type venues.

Fairgrounds Racket Club
For those living in the heart of urban centres like downtown Toronto, Fairgrounds Racket Club is tailored for you. Their approach is built around drop-in play instead of the more common gym membership style used by most clubs. Fairgrounds boosts padel courts in select locations as well.
HiSports
Where I play, a great network of competitive players in the Durham Region. HiSports is also expanding with a new location and multiple courts in North Toronto; check out HiSports Vaughan if closer to Toronto. HiSports' specialty is great tournament organization at each of their venues.
On my must-visit list for more Ontario play is SMASH Pickleball with their first location open now in London, Ontario. Another hot spot is The Kitchen TO, a smaller venue with 4 courts tucked away on the east side of Toronto.
Places to play pickleball are getting easier and easier to find north of the border. Exciting times for tapping into this amazing sport. Where will you be playing this summer?
